Midland Enhances A-548-TEV Plug Valve

Latest valve design improves bottom outlet valve cycle life and product compatibility

Skokie, ILMidland Manufacturing, the global leader in railroad tank car safety valves and equipment, and a division of OPW Fluid Transfer Group, upgraded its line of plug valves with the A-548-TEV Bottom Outlet Plug Valve. This Midland valve excels in the harsh operating environments of rail tank cars and satisfies the need for a reliable bottom outlet valve that can perform in a broad range of applications from ethanol to vegetable oils, and chemicals.

The A-548-TEV is Association of American Railroads (AAR) approved and is designed to improve sealing performance by utilizing dual O-Ring seals and a metal-to-metal seal, guaranteeing positive shutoff. A wide variety of O-Ring materials are available, including PFA encapsulated O-Rings which offer universal compatibility with most commodities, including ethanol and petroleum products. The A-548 Plug Valve mounts to the AAR Standard Universal Saddle, and allows conversion from plug valves to ball valves without needing to change the saddle. The new TEV PFA-encapsulated Viton O-Rings used on the A-548-TEV offers universal compatibility with most commodities.

The valve's simple vertical plug motion uses a live loaded spring to reduce the probability of a leak in the event of an accident. The internal valve style also reduces the overall installed weight, allowing for less additional required skid protection. By operating with a larger port opening, 4-1/2" rather than the standard 4" opening, the plug valve allows for faster unloading. The triple-seal design of the A-548 makes for a longer service life, lengthening the time between maintenance events.
