Blackmer Pumps Ease Transport of
ULSD With Self-Priming,
Dry Run Capabilities
Grand Rapids, MIOne
of the ancillary concerns associated with the Environmental
Protection Agency's new regulations requiring the use
of 15-ppm on-road ultra-low-sulfur-diesel (ULSD) fuel,
which came into effect last year, was whether the available
infrastructure could handle the demands of loading
and unloading this new fuel at various drop points
along the supply chain. The GX and X Series line of
positive displacement sliding vane pumps from Blackmer,
a global leader in rotary vane positive displacement,
eccentric disc and centrifugal pump technologies, has
put those concerns at ease. The new 15-ppm ULSD, which
replaced the 500-ppm low-sulfur diesel (LSD) standard
for on-road use, has a lower lubricity than LSD because
of the amount of sulfur, a natural lubricating agent,
that has been removed from the fuel.
Blackmer's
GX and X Series sliding vane pumps are ideal for handling
ULSD due to their self-priming and dry run capabilities.
Used for general transfer duty, the GX pump line is
available in port sizes from 2 inch to 4 inches, flow
rates from 30 to 520 gpm (114-1,855 lpm), while the
X pump line is available in port sizes from 1 inch
to 4 inches, flow rates from 3 to 510 gpm (11-1,930
lpm). The GX and X Series are both able to operate
in temperatures to 300F and relief valve pressures
to 125 psi. These pumps are ideally suited for handling
ULSD thanks to their self-priming and high suction
lift capabilities, which make them ideal for pumping
from underground storage tanks and bulk plants, stripping
lines, and completely removing the heel from rail and
transport tankers.
The
vane technology principles of the GX and X Series ensure
proper sealing and volumetric output performance, even
after significant in-service time. This eliminates
the efficiency-robbing "slip" that shortens lobe and
gear pump life, and improves production yields by stripping
lines clean of residual product. The GX and X Series
provides smooth, sliding vane action without metal-to-metal
contact, which reduces pump friction, eliminates galling
and minimizes agitation of fluids, resulting in shear-sensitive,
mild handling of thin liquids without product degradation.
External ball bearings are isolated from pumpage by
mechanical seals to maximize bearing life and minimize
contamination risk. Maintenance is also easy as the
vanes can be easily replaced without removing the pump
from the piping system.
